Scout Camp Activities

Expeditions

Rambling –  (One night expedition)  Under your own steam using GPS Geocaching walk the same trails as the old miner's, alongside a river, passed waterfalls and exploring mining relics - will you find gold? This expedition includes a historic train ride and is open to all participants. You will need good walking / tramping shoes and a daypack capable of carrying a lunchbox, drink bottle, torch, raincoat and personal first aid kit. Your overnight gear will be transported to you evening site. This expedition offers the opportunity to gain credits towards Tramping and Camping Adventure Skills Levels 4 - 6.

Tramping – (One and Two night expeditions) Walk through the nearby Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park, exploring and site seeing as you go. Visit old miners trails, mountain streams and iconic tramping trails and learn how to navigate. 2 night expedition participants will see the sun rise and set in a spectacular setting.  You will need to bring a large rucksack capable of carrying a sleeping bag and personal kit as a minimum.  This expedition offers the opportunity to gain credits towards Tramping Adventure Skills Levels 4 - 6. 2 night expedition participants will need to be 13 as at 1/1/2025

Survival – (One and Two night expeditions) Walk to a nearby base, setting up a simple camp and learn how to use nearby resources as if you got caught in the countryside unexpectedly.  This expedition offers the opportunity to gain credits towards Tramping and Camping Adventure Skills Levels 4 - 6.  2 night expedition participants will need to be 13 as at 1/1/2025.

Pioneering - (One and Two night expeditions) Learn many of the skills necessary to build campsites and equipment from wood and ropes, along with some expert level cooking techniques on the open fire and other skills in the Camping level 4 – 6 Adventure skills.  2 night expedition participants will need to be 13 as at 1/1/2025

Cycling – We are pulling the cycling base off as there are only 2 people that have picked it and as of today we still don't have any adults to run it.

Kayaking  (Two night Expedition only) Learn to use a kayak safely and then paddle along and explore one of the local waterways, staying overnight at selected campsites.  Must be able to swim 50 metres competently.  This expedition offers the opportunity to gain credits towards Water Skills Adventure Skills Level 4. Participants will need to be 13 as at 1/1/2025.

NB One night participants will have additional activities at Waitawheta Camp.

Craft & Fun Afternoons

The afternoons are a more relaxed type of events

1. Small rope work Macramé, Woggle & Bracelet making with Para-cord
2. Rafting & Tubing Make your raft or grab your tube and head off down the river.
3. Shooting These are all air rifles and you are shooting at targets.
4. Carving Bone, Stone & Leather
5. Pinewood Derby Make your own car and race it to see who’s the daily and total outright champion for the camp with the fastest car. This one will occur an extra cost of $??.
6. Swimming This is done as a Troop and go swimming at the local river. When the water level allows we get to jump off the bridge.


There is a campfire on the last night and each troop is expected to provide one sketch or skit for the campfire.

Camping competition

A camping competition will run from the second day of Camp.  The purpose of this competition is:

  1. Assist with raising the standards of health and safety on the Camp.
  2. Prepare contingents for what to expect at Jamboree.
  3. Training and upskilling of all Leaders.

There will be top contingent chosen each day, based on the scores from the daily inspections.  Winners will be awarded the “Kamping Cup” (yes that is how it is spelt) which they will keep for 24 hours.

Promise Cup competition

A youth member will be awarded the Promise Cup each day from the second day onwards.  This youth member will be chosen for their adherence to the Scout Promise and Law.  There are no set rules for the award of this cup.  In the past, the Cup has been awarded for:

  1. Pushing their personal boundaries far beyond anything they had done before.
  2. Care and consideration for other camp members.
  3. Positive attitude and giving everything a go, despite size or disability.
  4. Being very helpful and showing initiative.

Nominations for the Promise Cup can come from anyone, and should be given to the Camp Director.

Badge Swapping

Badge swapping at Summer Camp is welcome and encouraged.  Your child is welcome to bring along badges to swap with other participants.  The Summer Camp badge etiquette is that the swap is badge for badge.  Bartering for one badge in exchange for multiple badges is discouraged.
